Best of Both: Using Semantic Web Technologies to Enrich User Interaction with the Web, and Vice-Versa
In this paper we present and discuss some tenets of the broad and rather complex area of human-ontology interaction. In particular, we look at the familiar metaphors known from the user interaction with the web-based resources, and present them as suitable metaphors to bootstrap the user experience with the Semantic Web as a data- and knowledge-intensive extension of the standard Web. Then we elaborate in more detail the metaphor of semantic layering, which has been investigated by the author and his team in the context of Magpie, the first functional plugin for semantically enriched web browsing. After analyzing pluses and minuses of the implemented techniques for semantic layering, the paper moves towards a proposal assuming automatic layering with multiple relevant ontologies found on the Web. The paper discusses our experiences with using the Web as a large-scale knowledge repository that can be used as a background knowledge for standard web pages and thus drive the user interaction in a semantically rich manner.
